CEREC One Visit Porcelain Crowns:
CEREC is a dental restoration product that allows us to produce an porcelain crown using a variety of computer assisted technologies, including 3D photography and CAD/CAM. With CEREC, teeth can be restored in a single sitting, rather than the multiple sittings required with earlier techniques. Additionally, with the latest software and hardware updates, crowns, veneers, onlays and inlays can be prepared, using different types of ceramic material. We are one of only a handfull of offices in the U.S. offering this service.
CEREC offers somes very welcome advantages over the more conventional technique of crown preparation.
- The preparation of the tooth structure to receive the restoration is less invasive than the preparation needed for a conventional full coverage crown. Keeping more natural tooth helps the repair last longer.
- Time savings. It only takes one visit from prepartion to completion, as opposed to two trips for a traditional crown.
- There is no need for an impression.
- Since it only takes one appointment, it reduces the number of local anesthetic injections (shots) needed.
- There is no need for an uncomfortable temporary crown. Since there is no temporary crown, you wont have to make an extra trip to the office to replace it if it should happen to come off.
Porcelain Veneers: A Makeover for your Teeth
Dental veneers are thin, custom-designed restorations made of tooth-like ceramic material that, when applied over the surface of a tooth, can cover worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment, or even spacing and chips or cracks. (See our transformation page) Dental veneers fall into the category of cosmetic dentistry because they create a bright, white smile with beautifully aligned, shapely teeth. The ceramic quality of todays veneers provides a more natural look than whats been available in the past. Regardless of what causes unattractive teeth, dental veneers may solve most of even all of your cosmetic dental issues.
Bonding
Bonding is a term that is usually used to describe repairing imperfections in the front teeth. Minor chips on single teeth and gaps between the teeth are the most common reason bondings are used. (Larger fractures and misaligned teeth are usually corrected with porcelain veneers.) The material is similar to what is used for white (composite) fillings. The bonding material is matched to the shade of your teeth and we shape this material to the desired results. Most of the time this is completed in one visit, many times without the need for anesthetic.
White (Composite) Fillings
Are you embarrassed by those ugly black fillings in your mouth? Do they show when you laugh? You can now have your teeth looking back the way nature intended. Composites have been the cutting edge material in dentistry for the past several years. Composite is a high-tech plastic. A "Direct" Composite filling is a tooth colored filling that is done in a single office visit. It is most appropriate for small restorations. Periodontal (Gum) Disease:
The most common reason for tooth loss today is periodontal (gum) disease. It is estimated that 80 percent of the adult population has some level of gum disease, ranging from mild gingivitis to advanced periodontal disease. Gum disease is a silent killer of teeth (and perhaps more), as it is rarely painful. And, it's usually hidden from sight. However, there are signs and symptoms you may be aware of including:
- Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing
- Chronic bad breath
- Pus oozing from your gums
- Puffy, swollen, or red gum
- Loose teeth
This insidious disease can wreak havoc on your social and professional life. See what Woopie Goldberg said about periodontal disease on "The View".
Floss or DIE???
Sounds a bit silly or far-fetched, doesn't it? However, recent medical research is revealing some startling news about gum disease. It appears that heart attacks, strokes, premature birth, and even cancer may be more related to chronic inflammation in the body than the usual suspects. The most common source of chronic inflammation in the human body is, you guessed it: Gum Disease! The newly suspected relationship between gum disease and heart disease and strokes is still being studied, but we expect to hear more and more about it. It seems that healthy gums may actually maintain a healthy heart! Other studies have linked gum disease with low birth weight babies. Even more recently cancer (pancreatic, specifically) has been linked to the chronic inflammation from periodontal disease.
Teeth Whitening:
Years ago, the only way to bleach teeth was in the dental office. Today, when it comes to a whiter, brighter smile, you have a variety of options. You can use over-the-counter (OTC) whitening toothpastes and bleaching systems. They may whiten your teeth, but it will take years or decades. OTC bleaching systems do not use custom trays, and you may be ingesting more bleaching agent than what remains on your teeth. What causes tooth discoloration? The most common causes include aging, consumption of staining substances (coffee, tea, tobacco, and colas), trauma, nerve degeneration, old restorations, and poor oral hygiene.
There are two effective modalities commonly used in practice today. In-office tooth such as Brite Smile, offers optimum results in the shortest amount of time. The gel is placed on your teeth, then you relax. We do the rest. You will have a brighter smile and whiter teeth before you leave the office. In-office tooth whitening is designed to fit your schedule. You can customize whitening to fit into your busy lifestyle. In-office whitening can be done in about an hour, during lunch break or even before work. If further whitening is desired after your treatment, use of a take home whitening system can be worn for a few nights. For those with the time and inclination, a take home whitening system is used from a few days to four weeks for effective whitening. Molds of the mouth are taken and custom bleaching trays are made. The whitening agent is placed inside of the tray and the tray is then placed over your teeth . Most of the time, immediate results are seen after one in-office visit, or, if used at home, results are realized in just a few days.
For people who have yellow teeth, it is not realistic to obtain teeth that are as white as a piece of white paper. What you can expect is a result that is about two shades lighter than what you have now. Even with the most sophisticated system, there is variability in results, i.e. 3+ shades lighter to no change at all. Bleaching is a very safe, generally low cost, generally effective and very conservative cosmetic treatment.
Digital X-Rays:
Digital x-rays are a form of x-ray imaging where digital sensors are used instead of traditional x-ray film. Significantly less radiation can be used to produce an image of similar contrast to conventional x-rays. Other advantages include time efficiency through bypassing the chemical processing, the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images, the x-rays can be enlarged on a computer screen for easier viewing, and because there is no chemicals or lead, the process is environmentally friendly.
